What Kind of Writer Are You?
join me for a live conversation with Suzanne Kingsbury, founder of Gateless Writing
Ten years ago, I went on my first Gateless retreat. It was 2014 and I had an inkling that I wanted to write. I mean, I was writing but I wasn’t sure what to do with it, where I wanted it to go. Around that time, a friend introduced me to Suzanne Kingsbury. Suzanne had transformed her writing, my friend said, after a miserable MFA experience that left her uninspired and blocked. So I signed up for a weekend retreat with Suzanne in Rhode Island with really no idea what I was in for.
That weekend changed my life.
Suzanne likes to talk about the little whisper, that message from the universe that might be very quiet but that tells you something is about to change. The whisper that encourages you to sign up for that class, go to that reading, click that link. Ten years ago, I listened to that little whisper that said what the hey give it a chance what do you have to lose? And I’m so glad I did.
When I was on tour for My Last Innocent Year, I got a lot of questions about how I got started, how I kept going, how I knew I was a novelist.
I knew a lot of the people asking those questions were probably writers.
I feel like one of the reasons people put their writing in a drawer isn't because they don't want to publish but because the writing process can seem really mysterious. And in some ways, it is.
There are so many puzzle pieces having to do with craft, community, inspiration, and it can all feel confusing and ephemeral.
For me, a big part of the puzzle was Gateless. Gateless gave me a method to getting the writing done but also it gave me community, craft and the confidence to know that I might be able to do it.
Next Wednesday, I will be in conversation with Suzanne, founder of the Gateless methodology, to talk about how to find community, keep going, how to know what genre is yours, where your story lives and all of it.
Wednesday, October 2 from 1pm-2pmET on Zoom, you can register HERE
This is a free talk for writers with works-in-progress. To talk about the snags and hiccups.
We’ll discuss:
How to find the community that will inspire and uplift you, not drag you down
How to know what genre you want to dive into
Where the story lives inside you and how to access it
All of the things that can seem really mysterious when you are just getting into it—and honestly seem mysterious anytime during your career as a writer.
I would love if you would join us.
Next month, I’m heading on retreat again with Suzanne and many of the writers I met ten years ago, along with writers I’ve met along the way. For ten years, Gateless has been my community, my support system. When in doubt, I know I can always turn to my Gateless community and they will shine the light.
Consider this your little whisper….
The link to join is HERE.
And if you can't come, when you register, the replay will be sent to you.
Suzanne and I always open it up for questions. And because she is a novelist, too, we can talk industry, agents and all that, as well!
Can't wait to see you,
Daisy
Wish I could join, sounds great.
